Cubs Flip the Script with 3-2 Walk-Off vs. Padres

The Chicago Cubs came into Tuesday's game following a disappointing Monday loss that included another solid starting pitching performance followed by a bullpen letdown. But with Shota Imanaga on the mound Tuesday and the relief corps finally coming up clutch, the Cubs managed a 3-2 comeback victory against the San Diego Padres.

Tale of the Tape

After the exciting news of Cody Bellinger's return, the Cubs had added momentum. As Imanaga took the mound, it was go-time from the jump.

The left-hander continued to dazzle with his brilliance on the mound, providing the Cubs with seven innings of absolute dominance. He allowed just one walk, which came in the first inning.

For most of the game, Padres' hitters didn't seem to have any answer for what was coming their way.

To his credit, manager Craig Counsell stuck with his starter as long as he possibly could. Imanaga certainly left it all on the mound, and the Cubs were grateful for his efforts.

However, the North Siders' offense still had difficulty getting Imanaga the run support he deserved. Despite featuring a bullpen game, the Padres were able to limit the damage for the most part.

But Bellinger carried most of the offense in his return to the Cubs' lineup. The lefty notched three hits, including a solo home run to kick off the scoring.

To say the Cubs missed Bellinger would be an understatement. They certainly hope his bat will help spark a sleeping giant of an offense.

The Padres made things interesting as they finally got to Imanaga in the eighth inning. With the lefty at over 100 pitches, Jurickson Profar took him deep for a two-run home run to put San Diego ahead.

It's hard to fathom how the Cubs continue to find themselves trailing in the latter innings considering the production they've gotten from their starting pitchers.

Like clockwork, the Cubs were once again thrust into a late-game comeback scenario. Fortunately, Christopher Morel responded with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the eighth to a 2-2 game.

As Imanaga departed, Yency Almonte and Hector Neris picked him up by holding the tie score. It was a welcome sight after so many previous letdowns from the Cubs' bullpen.

Chicago's offense finally returned the favor with a walk-off home run from Michael Busch. The Cubs needed to have this game, and they finally swung the momentum for a win.

Takeaways

In overcoming their usual fatal flaws, the Cubs are finally trending up.

Even though the offense still struggled, Cody Bellinger provided a nice boost in his return. Once Seiya Suzuki comes back, the Cubs' lineup will be at full strength and ready to go.

The rotation once again kept the momentum rolling. Shota Imanaga has shown to be more than even advertised for the Cubs. Despite Jordan Wicks' and Kyle Hendricks' injuries, the Cubs' starters haven't missed a beat.

Julian Merryweather's injury continues to hamper a weakened bullpen that still can't run from the fact that further additions must be made if the Cubs want to be a legitimate competitor come October.
